THE DIRTY DETAILS

THE HISTORY

The struggle to survive.

Built in 1848, The Maitland Gaol was home to many of Australia's hardened criminals for 150 years. The prison was originally constructed by sandstone and as time went on many of the buildings were either modified or removed.  Up until 1951 convicted women were also housed in the facility and for those who had children were forced to bring them while being housed.  With an ever increasing in overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, many children died within the prison walls.

In the history of the facility being open there was only one riot that occurred.  In 1975 a total of over 70 inmates united and set fire to the maintenance block by use of cache of handcrafted weapons. This destruction was the worst and only riot the prison would ever see in its entirety.
